Understanding sleep apnea
The most common form of this condition is obstructive sleep apnea. OSA is characterized by pauses in breathing or periods of very shallow breath. As you fall asleep, soft tissues of the throat and the tongue collapse. They block the airway, restricting normal flow of oxygen, for seconds or minutes. The brain senses this deficiency and sends a jolt of adrenaline. You jerk, snort, or choke awake, and take a few normal breaths. Then the cycle repeats, potentially dozens of times per hour. OSA prevents you from reaching deep sleep stages that promote cellular rejuvenation. This condition is linked to a number of grave health issues including increased risk of stroke and heart attack, obesity, and depression.
Symptoms of sleep apnea:
- Loud snoring
- Frequent bathroom breaks
- Dry mouth or sore throat
- Morning headaches
- Falling asleep at inappropriate times
- Problems with mental focus
A comfortable alternative to CPAP
The first step is to have your OSA diagnosed by a physician, through a sleep study. Then, our dentists can design a customized oral appliance. This device looks something like a mouth guard. It is small and fits comfortably
over the front teeth. The appliance holds your mouth open just a little, with the lower jaw slightly forward, and depresses the tongue to keep the airway clear during sleep. Oral appliance therapy is very effective for mild to moderate cases of OSA. It can also be used with a conventional CPAP machine for improved results.
